Sustainability

Closed cares

Closed – Closed cares Closed – Closed cares

We are a family business, and we remain true to our roots of traditional craftsmanship, whilst constantly working on innovation. We are currently doing everything we can to become even more sustainable without neglecting our high-quality standards. Sustainability has always been close to our hearts, long before it became a buzzword and trend. For us, this topic was always a necessity, and so few words were spoken about it. However, we now want to change that because it is important to increase sustainability awareness. That’s why we want to create more transparency regarding what we are already doing and what we hope to do in the future to produce our collections in an even more eco-conscious way. This will show how important sustainability is to us but also to inspire others to take action too.

But our commitment goes even further: social responsibility is also a matter of course for us. Fairness and justice have been important to our company since 1978.

Our core values shape everything we do. For example, they were the starting point for our eco-friendly denim line. To take a closer look,

Let’s talk details.

Status quo – Sustainability at Closed

Closed – Our Standards: Sustainability

We are not an eco-label, but nevertheless, it is natural for us to continually develop new ways to become a more sustainable company. We are constantly working to make all processes as eco-conscious as possible. Step by step, we are leading Closed to a greener future.

Our goal is to produce our collections in an even more eco-conscious way, without neglecting our high-quality standards. Luckily, sustainability and quality often go hand-in-hand with one another. The prioritisation of high quality from the start of Closed has meant that many of our processes have been environmentally friendly since the early 1980s. Yes, this is a good start but one we don’t want to rest on.

As a company we have a holistic understanding of sustainability and share the current status with you here.

Step by step,

we’re
taking Closed towards a greener future.

European Production.

90 of our products are manufactured in Europe. This ensures shorter travel distances, but also improved products due to the familiarity of our European production partners with the production of high-quality clothing and accessories. Besides, we know this means the garments can be worn for longer and therefore contributes to a more responsible fashion industry. Our products are transported, not by plane but by land.

Fair Wear Foundation.

Since the beginning of 2021, Closed has been a member of the Fair Wear Foundation, which campaigns globally for fair working conditions in the textile industry.

Climate neutrality.

Our headquarters and warehouse in Hamburg have been climate neutral since 2018. We are trying to further reduce our C02 footprint - for example by using green electricity and avoiding unnecessary flights. We compensate for emissions that we cannot save by supporting internationally recognized climate protection projects. Since Autumn/Winter 2021, our ‘A BETTER BLUE’ jeans have been climate-neutral products.

By using recycled materials, we make an important contribution to environmental production and show that fashion and responsibility do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Every Closed jean is 100% made in Italy, from the first to the last production step and made with short distances between denim weaving, sewing and laundry. Together with our Italian denim experts we have developed our own eco-denim line.

Eco-denim line A BETTER BLUE.

During the production of our environmentally friendly denim line, A BETTER BLUE, significant amounts of water, energy and chemicals are saved thanks to innovative dyeing and washing processes, as well as eco-conscious materials, encouraging sustainable jeans from the first to the last step of production.

Organic materials.

Organic quality materials are much more environmentally friendly, which is why we prefer to use them. Growing organic cotton requires around 80% less water, 60% less energy and no chemicals in comparison to conventional cotton. The majority of our jeans and many other essentials, such as blouses, shirts, T-shirts or knitwear are therefore made from 100% organic cotton.

We also use organic linen and RWS wool. The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) is a certification for wool producers and traders. The aim is to improve the welfare of sheep and pastures. The certification ensures brand operations meet strict requirements regarding animal welfare, land management and social aspects.

In order to ensure the protection of our environment, we attach great importance to the use of sustainable materials in our products. These include recycled cotton, cashmere and elastane, as well as polyester and nylon.

In addition, the recycled polyester and nylon in our knitwear is not only environmentally friendly, but also has a positive impact on quality. These materials not only make the yarn more resistant, but also more durable. This means the garments can be worn longer and contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry. By using recycled materials, we make an important contribution to environmental protection and show that fashion and sustainability do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Innovation

Closed – Our Standards: Innovation
Traditional craftsmanship benefits from modern expertise.

Traditional craftsmanship benefits from the modern know-how. That’s why we’re using new technologies to advance sustainable and progressive production processes.

Traditional craftsmanship benefits from modern expertise.
Since 2015, we have always been using the innovative down alternative, Thinsolute™ Recycled featherless from 3M™ from St. Paul, Minnesota. The unique insulation is made entirely of recyclable polyester fibers to protect the environment, whilst offering a more animal-friendly alternative.

In our lightweight jackets we rely on Thermore® and Ecodown®, which has become even more sustainable since 2024 with the addition of Thermore Ecodown Fibers Ocean special. This fibre is made of 100% Ocean Cycle certified plastics, which make an important contribution to reducing plastic pollution in the world’s oceans. Thermore Ecodown Fibre Ocean is characterised by its low weight, extreme softness, thermal insulation and durability – a compelling option for environmentally conscious consumers.

Animal Welfare.
For reasons surrounding animal welfare, since 2014, we no longer use real fur. We are a part of the animal welfare organisation, FOUR PAWS ‘’Fur Free Retailer’’ programme. We also support the FOUR PAWS ‘’Brands Against Mulesing’’ initiative and are working as quickly as possible to guarantee that all yarns and fabrics containing wool are certified and mulesing-free; we have not used Angora or down for years. Our BETTER BLUE jeans are also 100% vegan just like many other products.

Non-disposal of Unsold Products.
We would never throw away or destroy unsold Closed products. Goods that are not sold at the full price are reduced in price during our sale periods and any remaining products will then be given another chance in our outlets. Whatever is not sold there goes into our warehouse sale, which takes place twice a year. For many years we have donated any products that are left over after the warehouse sale to a charity in Chile. The products are sold locally and all the proceeds are used to support a music school for children in need.

A BETTER BLUE

Closed – Our Story
% less water

% less energy
% less chemicals

Moreover, with our long-standing partners in Italy we have developed an eco-friendly denim line that is not only stylish, but also protects the environment. The production of A BETTER BLUE jeans saves significant amounts of water, energy and chemicals. Since 2018, we have been working tirelessly to make our A BETTER BLUE jean even more sustainable.

For our BETTER BLUE programmes, the focus is on our washing. For this purpose our laundries work with Jeanologia’s EIM score process. EIM stands for Environmental Impact Measurement and this innovative process gives a valid and comparable rating system, which helps us to use less water, energy and chemicals in the colour and washing process.

With the help of the EIM Score, it is possible to make sustainability measurable in the finishing process. This is how the EIM Score assesses the environmental influences that come into play during industrial laundry. The result is displayed via a traffic light system and the assessment is carried out in the categories of water, energy and chemicals, with the effects clearly classified in green, orange and red.

When evaluating, the occupational health and safety of the employees is also included in the score.

Our requirement is that our trousers are labelled green and therefore, the best EIM score. A BETTER BLUE also includes other criteria with at least two of which must be achieved. We therefore follow a three-pillar programme:

Social Responsibility

Closed – Our Standards: Responsibility

At Closed we are loyal. Many of our manufacturing partners have been with us for decades, and we see them as part of the family. These relationships are built on trust and form the basis for everything we do. For us, sustainability also means creating the same conditions for all workers. Today and tomorrow.

Fair Wear Foundation

As a member of the Fair Wear Foundation, the working conditions in our partners’ production sites are independently audited on a regular basis. Furthermore, through our membership we commit to the Fair Wear complaint system as well as transparent reporting. We react immediately to the results of all audits and incorporate them into the individual assessment of each production partner in order to be able to draw appropriate conclusions for further cooperation. This involvement and transparency are crucial for us to be able to positively influence the working conditions in the production sites in the long term.

We stand up for the Code of Labour Practices of the foundation. Our production partners have also signed these eight labour guidelines and informed their workers about them:

  • Employment is freely chosen
  • No discrimination in employment
  • No exploitation of child labour
  • Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
  • Payment of a living wage
  • No excessive working hours
  • Safe and healthy working conditions
  • Legally binding employment relationship

As part of our membership, we publish a Social Report (PDF) every year.

Furthermore, the report on our last Brand Performance Check (2023) was published on the Fair Wear Foundation website in Oktober 2024.

Code of Conduct

Our managers, designers and apparel engineers regularly visit our production sites and are in constant dialogue with our suppliers. These long-standing partnerships have resulted in a Code of Conduct for ecological and social guidelines – one based on mutual trust and followed as a matter of course. It is signed bi-annually by all our partners:
